Cardiac Rehabilitation

Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) provides coverage for a cardiac rehabilitation or physical therapy program if a Medicare beneficiary has had at least one of the following conditions:
- A heart attack in the last 12 months
- Coronary artery bypass surgery
- Current stable angina pectoris (chest pain)
- A heart valve repair or replacement
- A coronary angioplasty (a medical procedure used to open a blocked artery) or coronary stent (a procedure used to keep an artery open)
- A heart or heart-lung transplant
- Stable chronic heart failure
Medicare covers up to two one-hour sessions per day for up to 36-sessions. These sessions must occur during a 36-week period. If medically necessary, Medicare will cover an additional 36-sessions.

Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) also provides coverage for intensive cardiac rehabilitation programs that usually include more rigorous or intense exercise, education and counseling if a physician prescribes the program and the patient has any of the following conditions:
- A heart attack in the last 12 months
- Coronary artery bypass surgery
- Current stable angina pectoris (chest pain)
- A heart valve repair or replacement
- A coronary angioplasty (a medical procedure used to open a blocked artery) or coronary stent (a procedure used to keep an artery open)
- A heart or heart-lung transplant
If the patient qualifies, Medicare will pay for up to six one-hour sessions per day for up to 72 sessions. These sessions must occur during an 18-week period.
