Mental Health Services

Medicare Part B provides benefits for psychiatric services, which are medically necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of diagnostic and/or behavioral health treatment. Medicare recognizes the following Part B providers as eligible to furnish these services; physicians, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, clinical social workers, clinical nurse specialists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and certified nurse midwives.

Coverage is limited to those services that the mental health professional is legally authorized to perform under state law (or the state regulatory mechanism provided by state law) of the state in which such services are performed for the diagnosis and treatment of mental illnesses.
