Amending Medicare Cost Reports Prior to Desk Review

A provider may request changes to the Medicare cost report data from the time of initial filing to be considered in the final settlement. All requested changes, unless directed otherwise, must be made by submitting an amended cost report. NGS will consider accepting the submission of an amended Medicare cost report so long as it is prior to the start of the desk review (i.e. when the Medicare auditor begins their audit analysis of the cost report filed data). An exception to this would be if CMS were to issue a subsequent deadline for specified cost report revisions.

To aid certain provider types on the projected deadline to amend, NGS may send an initial request letter. NGS has created a schedule of deadlines applicable to these letters. Please refer to the following file showing this schedule: Medicare cost report initial request letter and due date list.xlsx.

This schedule is effective as follows:

  • J6: beginning with desk reviews planned to start 1/1/2018 and after
  • JK: beginning with desk reviews planned to start 3/1/2018 and after

Note: This list only represents cost reports that will receive a letter per the above desk review schedule. Regardless if a letter is sent, NGS will only permit amended cost report submissions prior to starting the desk review (again exception if CMS were to issue a separate deadline). Each year, NGS reevaluates the decision to issue these letters. Since the process is subject to change, providers should not place reliance on them as a trigger to submit an amended cost report.
