MBI Lookup Tool

The MACRA required CMS to remove SSNs from all Medicare cards by April 2019. A new randomly generated MBI replaced the SSN-based HICN on new Medicare cards for transactions like billing, eligibility status and claim status. The MBI Lookup tool will allow you to search and receive a patient’s MBI.

Accessing the MBI Lookup Tool

  1. Click the MBI Lookup link, located in the upper right hand corner of the page.

Security Requirements

The new MBI look-up window will be displayed and you will be required to validate using the CMS required reCaptcha software to access MBI information.

  1. Click the checkbox indicating you are not a robot.

  1. A group of images may display and if displayed, you will be asked to select all images of a specific type.

    Note: If the images do not display this means validation was successful and the Submit button will display in the tool and you can initiate an MBI search.

  1. Click the Verify button.

Note: If the images continue to display after the Verify button is selected, click in the MBI Lookup Tool. If the Submit button is visible this means validation was successful and you can initiate the MBI search.

  1. Once validation is successful, the Submit button is enabled in the MBI Lookup tool and you can initiate a search.

    Note: You will have an unlimited number of attempts to validate.

  2. The # of searches made in this session field will display the number of searches completed per session. You will be able to complete five MBI searches before the reCaptcha validation software is presented again.

Initiate a Search

  1. Enter the CMS required search criteria
    • Patient Last Name - the last name entered must be entered exactly as it is on file with the Social Security Administration.
    • Patient First Name -  first name entered must be entered exactly as it is on file with the Social Security Administration.
    • Patient Date of Birth – MMDDYYYY format
    • Patient Social Security Number
    • NPI – you must enter an NPI for a provider account that you currently have access to in NGSConnex.
  1. Click the Submit button.

  1. The MBI number will display in the MBI # field.

Note: If the search criteria entered is invalid or does not match what is on file with Social Security and error message will display. If the information entered is for a deceased beneficiary and their date of death is more than 4 years prior to the date of the search the MBI will not display.

  1. Click the New Search button to initiate a new search for a different patient.
  2. If you have completed all of your MBI searches, click the Done button to return to the NGSConnex Homepage. Note: If you would like to initiate an eligibility search for the patient you completed the MBI lookup for , click the Eligibility tab from the top navigation toolbar and the information will auto-populate in the Beneficiary Eligibility search applet.
