Medicare covers home medical equipment. Claims for these items fall into different groups, such as durable medical equipment (DME), prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies (DMEPOS). These items are separated from Medicare Part B claims and processed through one of four durable medical equipment Medicare administrative contractors (DMA MAC) in the United States for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)—the federal government agency that oversees the Medicare program.
The following series of DME Fact Sheets were developed to help People with Medicare understand Medicare’s coverage of home medical equipment. You are encouraged to download each Fact Sheet and distribute to your Medicare patients that require the use of DMEPOS items.
